Camarillo, Calif., May 9, 2005 - At its third annual commencement ceremony, Saturday, May 21, 91³Ô¹Ï will present the Class of 2005, honor former Congressman Robert Lagomarsino and philanthropist John Spoor Broome with honorary degrees, and feature California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell as guest speaker.
The University expects approximately 5,200 guests, in addition to graduates and members of the campus community. Approximately 787 students, which include CSUCI undergraduate and credential students and California State University Northridge students, are eligible to participate in the event. The number of graduates expected to participate is approximately 460, of which approximately 50 are members of the final California State University Northridge at Channel Islands class.
This year, the University is conferring its first honorary degrees. In recognition of his outstanding achievements as a public servant, philanthropist, and longtime advocate for education, former Congressman Robert Lagomarsino will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LL.D.).
In addition, to honor his outstanding achievements as businessman, public servant, philanthropist, and tireless advocate for education, longtime Ventura County businessman John Spoor Broome will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (L.H.D).
The event will begin at 9 a.m. on the South Quad of the CSUCI campus. Due to the high volume of people expected and extremely limited parking, students, families, friends, and CSUCI staff are encouraged to arrive as early as 7 a.m. and to ride-share or use public transportation if possible to reduce the volume of traffic on campus.
For those driving, signs will indicate parking areas. Guests' vehicles will be directed to lots near the campus and shuttles will be provided to the South Quad area. Graduates may park their vehicles at specific locations on campus as directed by parking officials.
For more information, contact the University at 805-437-8400. In the event of inclement weather, please check the CSUCI Web site or call for any change in logistics.
