Camarillo, Calif., Aug. 28, 2007—91Թ began its fall semester on Aug. 27. During the upcoming weeks, faculty and staff members have organized and scheduled several events that will be happening both on and off the CSUCI campus. The following information details some of the events planned for September. Thursday, Sept. 27 – Author Peter Richardson
Author Peter Richardson will present a lecture titled: “American Prophet: The Civic Engagement and Public Scholarship of Carey McWilliams” from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Sept. 27 at 91Թ. The event will be held on campus in Malibu Hall 100. Admission is free. Free parking and shuttle service to and from the campus will be available from the Camarillo Metrolink Station/Lewis Road parking lot in Camarillo from 5 to 9 p.m. Parking is available on campus and is $6 for a daily permit.
Richardson is the editorial director at PoliPoint Press in Sausalito, Calif. He is the author or editor of numerous works on language, literature, and California public policy, including the biography, “American Prophet: The Life and Work of Carey McWilliams.” He holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Berkeley.

Monday, Sept. 10 – Author Sandra Cisneros
Award-winning author Sandra Cisneros will offer a reading and book-signing at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10 at 91Թ. Cisneros is the author of “The House on Mango Street” and “Caramelo.” The event will be held on the CSUCI campus in Malibu Hall 100. Admission is free. There will be free shuttle service from the Camarillo Metrolink Station/Lewis Road parking lot in Camarillo; bus runs every 15 minutes. Parking is available on campus and is $6 for a daily permit.
Cisneros is the author of several books including a chapbook of poetry, “Bad Boys” (Mango Press 1980); two full-length poetry books, “My Wicked Wicked Ways” (Third Woman 1987, Random House 1992) and “Loose Woman”(Alfred A. Knopf 1994); a collection of stories, “Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories” (Random House l991); a children's book, “Hairs/Pelitos” (Alfred A. Knopf 1994); and two novels, “The House on Mango Street” (Vintage 1991) and “Caramelo” (Knopf 2002).

Wednesday, Sept. 19 – Poetry Reading, Maria Melendez and Paul Willis
Authors Maria Melendez and Paul Willis will be at 91Թ at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 19 for a poetry reading titled: “Poetry, Science, Spirit.” The event will be held on the CSUCI campus in the Aliso Hall Auditorium. Admission is free. Parking is available on campus and is $6 for a daily permit.
Melendez serves as Associate Editor for Momotombo Press and as co-coordinator for “Poetas y Pintores: Artists Conversing with Verse,” a traveling exhibition of contemporary Latino art and poetry. Her collection of poetry, “How Long She’ll Last in This World,” was published in 2006 by the University of Arizona Press. Paul Willis has taught at Westmont College since 1988. He has published numerous poems in journals such as “Poetry,” “Ascent, Askew,” “Wilderness,” and “Christian Century.” His most recent chapbooks are “Poison Oak” (Mille Grazie Press, 1999), “The Deep and Secret Color of Ice” (Small Poetry Press, 2003), and “How To Get There” (Finishing Line Press, 2004).

Wednesday, Sept. 19 – Artist Lecture, Matthew Furmanski
Matthew Furmanski, assistant professor of art at 91Թ, and Monica Furmanski will offer an artists’ lecture about their work exhibited at the Atkinson Gallery at Santa Barbara City College at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 19 at the Atkinson Gallery. The Furmanskis’ work will be displayed from Aug. 31 to Sept. 28 at the gallery with the opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 31. The Atkinson Gallery is located in the Humanities Building, East Campus, Santa Barbara City College.
The Furmanskis’ exhibit broadens the traditional notions of sculpture, photography, and design. Matthew Furmanski will exhibit a range of work from digital imagery to steel sculpture. The Atkinson Gallery’s Web site is .

91Թ presents “An Evening with Patch Adams” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 26. The event will be held on the CSUCI campus in Malibu Hall 100. A book-signing will follow from 8 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets for the event are $30 for the general public, $15 for CSUCI faculty and staff members, free for CSUCI students. Patch Adams, M.D., is a nationally known speaker on wellness, laughter, and humor as well as on health care and health care systems. He approaches the issues of personal, community, and global health with zestful exuberance, according to Time Magazine.
