Freshman Sara Parker took top speaking honors at the fifth semi-annual Talkin' Dolphins Speech and Debate Tournament. Parker took first place in four out of six events, scoring a total of 24 out of a possible 30 points. Jeska Fitzpatrick took second place in overall scoring, competing in five events with a total of 13 points. Fitzpatrick was also the tournament's only returning participant. Marie Pritchard-Martinez finished in third for top speaking honors, competing in four events with a total 12 points. Twenty-one students competed in the intra-campus event held Saturday, November 19 at Cal State Channel Islands.
Past tournament winners have been propelled into the spotlight, asked to speak at campus functions, voted into student government office and other student leadership positions, and have gone on to compete as well as coach at graduate school level.
As part of CSUCI's co-curricular program, the Talkin’ Dolphins Speech and Debate Tournament is held each semester as a requirement of Dr. Wm. Gregory Sawyer’s public speaking class, which is open to all CSUCI students.
Tournament categories include: impromptu speaking, informative speaking, persuasive speaking, ceremonial speaking, dramatic duo, prose, and poetry.
First, second, and third places are awarded to the top three speakers in each of the final rounds except for dramatic duo, which is awarded first and second place.
The Tournament's Outstanding Speaker Award is based on the total points cumulated from all event finals.
The next Talkin' Dolphins Speech and Debate Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, April 22, 2006, at Cal State Channel Islands.
