Camarillo, Calif., Feb. 28, 2007 - 91³Ô¹Ï announces that sailing is its first recognized club sport. The student-formed club will compete against other universities and colleges at regattas held throughout the state.

The first regatta that CSUCI Sailing will compete in is the Cal Team Regatta hosted by the University of California Berkeley held on March 3 and 4 at Treasure Island Sailing Center. Competitors at this event include: the University of California Berkeley, the University of California San Diego, Stanford, the University of California Los Angeles, and California Maritime Academy.

CSUCI Sailing has 12 student members. CSUCI Sailing's president is Austin Dias, a junior, and one of the co-founders of the club.

“We are very excited to be able to represent our University in a sport that we love,†said Dias. “We hope to create something great, but first we expect these first couple of regattas to be humbling.â€

Collegiate sailing is governed by the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) and is not a sport governed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). 91³Ô¹Ï Sailing is a member of the ICSA, which permits the club to compete in ICSA sanctioned events.

“The Sailing Club will be CSUCI's first presence at a sporting event and members of the club will be competing against very well-known universities and colleges in the western region,†said Ed Lebioda, assistant vice president of Student Affairs at Cal State Channel Islands.

The CSUCI Sailing club is a student-run organization that is guided by rules and regulations established by the University's Division of Student Affairs. The purpose of CSUCI Sailing is to field an excellent group to race in ICSA events, provide new sailors with a positive club experience, and to promote sailing in the community in collaboration with the CSUCI Waterfront Program.
