WHAT:Ā At the above place and time, the CSUCI biology program will present āThe Age of the Genome: Using DNA to Understand Health, Evolution, and the Environment.ā This symposium will explore the implications of the Human Genome Project for our understanding of medical diagnosis and therapy, the environment, and our evolution, as well as the ethical issues raised by these technologies.
The Human Genome project was officially started in 1990 - its goal: to discover all the genes in the human genome, through a complete analysis of the sequence of the DNA in the human genome. The first portion was not completed until 1999, yet within one more year a āworking draftā of the entire genome was announced, and the genome was declared completely analyzed in 2003. The unexpected pace with which the project was completed has left the scientific and lay communities struggling to catch up, and keep up, with the many applications of the new āGenomicsā approach to humans and other organisms. Along with the tremendous promise of Genomics comes a tremendous challenge to educate the public to its uses and implications.
