Jeff YangApr. 21, 2025 - New York Times best-selling author Jeff Yang will be a guest at CSU Channel Islands (CSUCI) as part of the University’s Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage month series of events.

The campus and public are invited to “RISE in Representation: Asian Americans in Cinema and Pop Culture — A Conversation with Jeff Yang,” which will take place on Tuesday, April 22, 1:30-2:30pm in Malibu Hall, Room 120; 20 Chapel Dr on the CSUCI campus.

As a journalist, cultural critic and author, Yang has been a leading voice in documenting and analyzing the evolution of Asian American identities and experiences. CSUCI Dance Studies Lecturer MiRi Park will moderate a discussion with Yang about his two most recent books: “The Golden Screen: The Movies That Made Asian America,”  and “Rise: A Pop History of Asian America from the Nineties to Now” to explore how television, and pop culture have shaped and challenged public perceptions of Asian American communities.

The first fifty student attendees registered will receive a free copy of The Golden Screen, and abook signing will follow the talk. Refreshments will also be provided.

Yang’s lecture will serve as the kickoff event for our AAPI Celebration Week on campus. The week continues with a lecture by CSUCI Assistant Professor of Asian American Studies Lily Anne Tamai, Ph.D. on Wednesday, April 23, followed by the first ever CSUCI AAPI Night Market at the CSUCI Central Mall on Thursday, April 24.

The AAPI Heritage Month Lecture is co-sponsored by the Asian/Asian American Pacific Islander Association (AAPIA), Broome Library, CI Dance Studies, and Inclusive Student Services, with support from Instructionally Related Activities (IRA) funds.
