Oct. 25, 2024 – Faculty Development Director and Professor of Sociology Dennis J.
Downey, Ph.D., and Associate Professor of Mathematics Brooke Ernest, Ph.D., recently
co-published , “Cultivating Quantitative Literacy in the Introductory Course: A Mathematics Education
Collaboration to Teach the Gini Coefficient.”
The Gini Coefficient is referred to as the most commonly used summary of measure of income inequality and is often used to help inform policies that will help the underserved. The two instructors write about their collaboration to foster quantitative literacy in the introductory sociology course while highlighting the value of cross-disciplinary study.
The article was published in “Teaching Sociology,” a publication that houses “…articles, conversations, notes, and review to advance the quality of sociology instruction and the scholarship of teaching and learning in the discipline.”
